Reno NV

"Thomas Arthur Smith was born on August 17, 1927, in Highland Park Michigan. The son of Scottish immigrants, he grew up in the Detroit area, and even played professional minor league hockey for one season in 1948-49. In 1950, he volunteered for the United States Army, and served two years in West Germany with the U.S. Occupational forces there. After his honorable discharge, Thomas spent the next 19 years traveling throughout the United States, as well as Mexico, until he settled in the Reno area in 1969. At the age of 42, he married Victoria, with whom he would spend the rest of his life, and settled in Verdi to raise a family. A machinist by trade, and a geologist by choice, Thomas loved the Nevada desert, and often took his family on camping trips to observe the geological formations unique to the Great Basin. He and his wife raised four children, two belonging to him by birth, and two others he accepted and thought of as his own. Throughout his life, Thomas enjoyed traveling frequently, and indulging his passion for geological study. In addition, he was Kerak Shriner, as well as a dedicated member of the Freemasons, and proudly attained the level of Master within the ancient fraternity. On February 5, 2007, at the age of 79, Thomas passed away at his home in Verdi in the company of his loving wife, Victoria. In addition to his spouse, he is survived by four devoted children; Christopher, Shawn, Sharon, and Karron, three admiring sons-in-law; Jeffrey, Garrett, and Stephen, as well as five grandchildren; Ramona, Carmen, Jeffrey, Michael, and Parker. A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Saturday, February 10, at 1 p.m. at the Ross, Burke, and Knobel Mortuary located at 2155 Kietzke lane in Reno. A short reception will immediately follow the service at the same location. "
