"Bill Monroe Smith HURLEY, Va. Bill Monroe Smith, 56, of Hurley, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2007 at the Buchanan General Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, Va., he was the son of the late Dewey Hassell and Mary Jane Blankenship Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and attended the Bethel Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and was a retired coal miner. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife: Marie Justus Smith of Hurley; one daughter: Janie Smith Johnson of Hurley; two stepdaughters: Sharon and husband Gary Shafer of Hurley, Sherry and husband Danny Estep of Hurley; two stepsons: Buddy and wife Debby Gibson of Bloomingdale, Ill., Billy Gibson of Franklin Park, Ill.; three sisters: Sue and husband Rocky Justice of Panther, Fern and husband Arnold Justice of Panther, Marie and husband Stewart Justus of Hurley; one brother: Dewey Hassell Smith Jr. of Panther; one grandson: Justin Cody Vandyke of Hurley. Also, survived by seven step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Bill Monroe Smith will be conducted Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Word Evangelistic Outreach Church (WEO) with Evg. David Cline and Pastor Jeff Stacy officiating with burial to follow in the Annon Blankenship Cemetery, Hurley, Va. Friends called at the Word Evangelistic Outreach Church (WEO) Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. with services at 7:00 p.m. There will also be a service Wednesday (today) at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be: Rocky Justice, Arnold Justice, Justin Justice, Wesley Shafer, Josh Gibson, Charlie Gibson, Stewart Justus Jr., James Justice, Dennis Justice, Michael Bailey, Herman Duty and Lawrence Slone. Honorary pallbearers will be: Rick Mullins, Justin Vandyke, Harold Vandyke, Jerry Vandyke and Buddy Gibson. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy, Va. is in charge of all arrangements."
