"John Thomas Smith of Boston, a drummer and retired Boston Herald pressman, died Dec. 3, at his companion s home. He was 50. Born in Pittsburgh, Mr. Smith was a resident of Boston since 1979. He was a graduate of South Hills High School in Pittsburgh and was an alumnus of Berklee College of Music. Mr. Smith was the house drummer and band leader at Wally s Cafe for about 10 years. He was a counselor for troubled children at Hayden School for about two years. Prior to 1998, he worked in a number of part-time and full-time positions at the Boston Herald until he took early retirement as a pressman in 2005. Mr. Smith enjoyed food and cooking. His greatest loves were drumming and music. Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Michael Rashad Mobley-Smith of Boston; a daughter, Briana Marcia Lindsey of Boston; his mother, Mary Lou Smith of New Haven, Conn.; a sister, Mary Lou Henneman of St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers, Curtis Hopkins of Detroit and James Hopkins of New Haven, Conn.; a cousin, Aleta Preer of Boston; his longtime companion, Clara Higginbottom of Boston and her daughters, Monique and Sanovia Higgenbottom of Boston; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Davis Funeral Home, Mattapan. Burial will be private."
