Thomas A. Smith, 70, formerly of 424 Genesee St., died Thursday afternoon, April 12, 2012, in the Oneida Extended Care Facility, where he has been a patient since 2010. He was born April 15, 1941, in Oneida, a son of Basil and Marion Ford Smith. Mr. Smith was a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam. He had also been employed as a communication specialist at Hancock Air Base, in North Syracuse. He was a member of the Oneida American Legion Post 169, the Durhamville Veterans Club; the Oneida Owls Nest 1606 and the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, of Oneida Lodge 767. Surviving are two sons, Donald Smith of Massachusetts and Stephen Smith of Arizona; a brother, David Smith of Texas; three sisters and two brothers-in-law; Judy (Alice) Bennett of Oneida Castle; Beverly and Edward Costello of Stephens City, Va. and Donna and Mario Busa of The Villages, Fla.; his aunt, JoAnn Staudt of Sherrill; his step-mother, Rosalie Whipple Smith of Oneida; a half-brother, Donald Smith of California and his half sisters, Laurie and Larry Catney of Oneida, Amy and George Butler of Oneida, Nancy Smith of Oneida and Louise Williamson of Oneida. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 16, 2012 at 2 p.m., from the Coolican-McSweeney Funeral Home, 322 Washington Ave., Oneida, with Pastor Frank Loan, of the Vernon United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the V.A. Lot in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneida, with Full Military Honors. Friends may call on Monday from noon to 2 p.m. preceding the service. Contributions in Tom's memory may be made to the Oneida Extended Care Facility, 323 Genesee St., Oneida, N.Y. or the Oneida American Legion Post 169. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
