CUMBERLAND - Bill L. Smith, 86, of Cumberland, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. The son of Olga B. and Stanley Oliver Smith, Bill was born in Fayette City, Pa. in 1925. Upon graduating from high school in 1943, he joined the Navy and served during World War II as Quartermaster on board the PT 124. After the war, he graduated from Juniata College in Huntington, Pa. in 1948 with a degree in Business Administration and went on to get his law degree from Duke University in Durham, N.C. in 1954. He also served in the Navy during the Korean War for 2 more years. Bill practiced law in Richmond, Va., for 15 years before moving to Cumberland, and opening his private law office here in 1982. He continued to practice law up to March of 2009. Bill received many acknowledgments for his pro bono service to the community. He was a member of Winifred Road Church of Christ, and was a member of the Mason Dixon Saddle Club and the old Mexico Farms Horse Club. He has played on several shuffle bowl league teams and pool teams over the years for Jo-Bob s, P.C. s and Thirsty s. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra Thompson Smith; his older sister, Gretchen Olds; seven daughters; twelve grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. Children include his daughters, Sherry and her husband Jim Thompson, Peggy and her husband Dave Neef, Mary Cinquemani, Kristy Smith, Gretchen and her husband Lief West, Michelle Smith, and Suzanne and her husband Keith Trussell. His grandchildren include Shawn Thompson and his wife Debora, Jason Thompson and his wife Dawn, Travis Thompson and his wife Anna, Brian Thompson, Frederick Neef and his wife Danielle, Rick Neef and his wife Holly, Andrea Davis and her husband Phillip, Jason Burrell, Travis West, Alexis West, Macy West, and Isaac Trussell. His great-grandchildren include Shakor Neef, Peyton Neef, Alexa Neef, Avaya Neef, Skylar Neef, Tyson Neef, Callie Neef, Ethan Neef, Tyler Davis, Terrance Davis, Lucas Thompson, Liam Thompson and Logan Thompson. Bill was one of a kind and will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be conducted in the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday, July 14, at 1 p.m. with Minster Leo Lavin officiating
