RICHLAND CENTER - John Smith, age 87, of Richland Center died Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at Schmitt Woodland Hills. He was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Rockbridge Township, the son of Charles and Iola (Peckham) Smith. In childhood his family moved to Ithaca where they lived for many years. He was a Captain of the Ithaca High School basketball team. On May 15, 1954, John married Doris Miller of Ithaca. John worked for 22 years as a Carnation Company Milk Tester in Richland Center and served as union representative for the teamsters. John owned and operated Smith's Men Store in Richland Center for 25 years. Over the 25 years John had the privilege to associate with a number of loyal and reliable employees. After retirement John and Doris spent winters in Arizona with family and friends. John enjoyed traveling, growing Dahlias, grounds keeping, and was an avid outdoorsman, especially hunting and fishing. He played the harmonica, golfed, and played cards for many years. He was a member of the Lions Club and St. John's Lutheran Church. John is survived by wife of 58 years, Doris; four children, John Smith, Jr. of Richland County, Heidi Smith of Atlanta, Ga., James Smith of Richland County, and Gregory Smith of Oregon, Wis.; four grandchildren, Angela and Shannon Smith of Wisconsin and Katie and Eric Meyer of Georgia; mother-in-law, Merle Miller of Richland Center; sister, Virginia Johnson of Palm Desert, Calif., many other relatives, and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Iola Smith; eight brothers and sisters; and father-in-law, Lemuel Miller Sr. Memorial services will be held on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service of Richland Center is assisting the family with their arrangements.
