"Joe Van Miller Sr. SAlISBURY - Joe Van Miller Sr., 85, of Salisbury, passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at his home. Born June 5, 1927 in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Jessie Fleta Click Miller and Thomas Lemuel Miller Sr. He was educated at Woodleaf school and graduated in 1944. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Miller was employed for Duke Power Company for 31 years at Buck Steam Station before retiring in 1984. He loved gardening, fishing at Kure Beach fishing pier, shopping for shoes and spoiling his grandchildren. He was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, the ""Launch Pad"" Sunday School Class and served on the Finance Committee. He was also a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion, Post 342, and Spencer Moose Lodge 2019. The youngest and last of eight brothers and sisters, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Flora Josephine Hayworth Miller, on Feb. 19, 2003. Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Joe Van Miller Jr. and wife Jacqueline of Salisbury, Mark Miller and wife Pamela of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Eric Miller and wife Cindy of Rowlett, Tex.; dearest friend Helen Gordon of Salisbury; grandchildren Craig, Christina, Andrew, Ashby, Katie, Austin, Kara, Caleb, Joseph; seven great-grandchildren and one on the way; and numerous nephews and nieces. Service: A celebration of his life will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 22) at Stallings Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Charlie Bryan officiating. Mr. Miller will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Interment will follow at Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Summersett Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, 817 S.
