J. Randall Donahue Bonita Springs, FL J. Randall Dona hue, 67, died Saturday morning, August 16, 2003 in the emergency room of the Cape Cod, Falmouth, MA hospital. Ran /John was the beloved husband of Bernice Fouhey. Born in Boston, son of Gertrude and John Donahue, deceased. He was raised in Jamaica Plain/Wollaston and lived in Trumbull, CT for 35 years. Resided in Bonita Springs, FL and summered in Bourne, MA until his death. He is predeceased by two sons, Jeffrey Craig (1961) and Brent Charles (1988); survived by loving son, Douglas and daughter-in-law, Ching-yen Clare Chen, formerly of Taiwan; precious grandchildren, Erin, 11 and Torin, eight; brother, Bruce Donahue of Norwell, MA; and sister, Natalie O'Brien of Topsail Island, NC; aunts, Rita Lynch and Clare Spellman of Wollaston, MA; many nieces, nephews and their children; several cousins; and many wonderful friends. Ran graduated from Commerce High School, Boston, MA in 1952, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Buzzards Bay, MA in 1956 and received his Navy Commission of ensign and earned his Masters degree in American Studies/Education from Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT. Following his graduation from Maritime Academy, he successfully completed the Naval Aviation program in 1958 and married Bernice Bernie and was assigned to a top secret squadron at Port Layutey, Morocco, Africa and Rota, Spain. While living abroad he welcomed his firstborn son, Douglas Randall into the world, the happiest day of my life . Lt. Donahue served his next tour in flight squadron vs-22, based aboard the carrier, Lake Champlain in Quonset Point, RI and picked up Alan Shepherd and his capsule in offshore waters. Lt. Donahue achieved the distinction of being the only squadron pilot to complete 200 safe take offs and landings aboard the carrier and was awarded the Tailhooks from his 100th and 200th landings. Ran taught in Naval Officers School in Newport, RI for two years. In 1964 he was honorably discharged from the Navy, having been selected for LTCDR and joined United Airlines as a pilot, based in New York. He and his family lived in Trumbull CT until 1997. Ran also substitute taught at Trumbull High School for 25 years. He was a member of Black Rock Yacht Club, Bridgeport, CT for 20 years, serving as Commodore in 1995. An avid sailor, he and son, Brent owned and raced a green J-24, O'Donncaoa and won many sailing awards. Ran Donahue also served as an Airlines Pilots union rep in New York City for many years. In the early 1980's he and Bernice purchased their summer home in Bourne, MA. He achieved the rank of Captain, flying out of Chicago until he was medically retired with heart problems in 1991. They sold their Connecticut home of 25 years and moved to Spanish Wells Country Club in Bonita Springs, FL in 1996, where he resided with his wife until his death. He and Bernice met at 15, married at 21 and celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in February on a cruise to Mexico. Ran possessed a happy, positive attitude and loved God, his family, friends his country, flying and the sea. A multifaceted man, he enjoyed, many hobbies, including stamp collecting, crossword puzzles, building model ships, anything Irish, genealogy, nature, golfing, learning, laughter and life itself. Ran was a member of the Tailhook Society, MMA alumni, ALPA, RUPA, Spanish Wells Country Club and a parishioner at St. Leo Church, Bonita Springs. In celebration of Ran's life, there will be three memorial services. The first will be held on Friday August 22nd at St. Teresa' Church, Sagamore, Cape Cod at 11:00 a.m., casual attire preferred. The second is scheduled for Saturday, August 30th a 9:00 a.m. at St. Stephen's Church, 6948 Main Street, Trumbull, CT. The third will take place in Bonita Springs in October, date and time to be determined.
