Date of Death: 4/22/2006

Roseburg OR

"E. Michael Smith SMITH, E. Michael Age 68, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away April 22, 2006, from Leukemia at home with his loving family by his side. He was born on August 12, 1937, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to Mozelle and Erdis Smith. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy mostly in Japan from 1955 until 1959. He returned to Klamath Falls and worked for Weyerhaeuser until he figured that the cold weather was not for him. He left for California and ended up at Vandenberg working the space program as a machinist. He married Patricia Lee Calvin in 1965 and resided in Santa Maria, California. They had two sons. Later they moved to Orange County, California. Michael had joined the International Association of Machinist and was voted in as their President of District Lodge No. 720 in Torrance, California. He served eight years as their president and retired in 1993. They then moved to Roseburg. His wife, Patricia, died of cancer in 1995. Michael attended a bereavement group and later met Peggy Abodeely there. After a beautiful courtship they were married on August 29, 1999. The two of them had a wonderful chance at love the second time around and they lived life to the fullest. Which included bowling, golfing, traveling, dancing, walking on the beach, going on picnics and making their own wine (the best in the west). In their travels they would plan on going to as many cooking schools as possible, New Orleans; Las Vegas; Astoria; and they were to go to Paula Deen s school in Savannah, Georgia, in September. Michael was the most loving husband, father, step-father, grandfather, brother, and friend that God put on this Earth. He had a lot of one-liners to tell and always welcomed a good joke. He loved to tease and you could tell by the twinkle in his eyes. He gave the very best of hugs in the world, and many can attest to that. Respectful of others, honest and caring; there just aren t enough adjectives to describe My Michael . He is preceded in death by his late wife, Patricia and his father, Erdis. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Peggy Margaret ; sons and their families, Wesley and Mary and grandchildren, Ryan and Megan; Perry and Kim and grandchildren, Carrisa, Kamren, Tatiana and great-grandchild, Michael; mother, Mozelle and step-dad, Ray South; brothers, James, Dawson and Steven; step-children, Rick and Denise Abodeely; cousin and husband, Peggy Jean and Earl Gust; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and close to his heart, his many dear friends. Michael said that he was ready for Jesus to take his hand and help him on his journey. Graveside services will be at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2006, at Valley View Cemetery. The Reverend Mr. John Stenbeck will officiate. Military Honors will be provided by the VFW District 12 Honor Guard. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is assisting the family."
